A new feud has arisen between Russia and Britain. Russia said on Tuesday it fired warning shots and dropped bombs en route to a British destroyer sailing in the Black Sea off the coast of the Crimean peninsula, which Russia seized from Ukraine. 20 Russian fighter jets and two Coastguard ships chased a British fighter jet off Crimea.
Russian Defense Minister says British ship HMS Defender has entered Russian waters near Crimea. In protest, a patrol ship opened fire on him and a warplane dropped bombs on his way. However, Britain has denied that its forces opened warning shots on a British warship in the Black Sea.
Britain’s Defense Ministry has said that no bombs were dropped or shots fired. Said the ship was in the waters of Ukraine. A spokesman for the British Prime Minister’s Office said: “HMS Defender was traveling between Ukraine and Georgia via a direct and internationally recognized route.” The spokesman said that Russia had previously warned Britain that they were conducting exercises in the Black Sea near the route from which the British ship was going.
According to a statement by the Russian Defense Ministry released in Russian media, the incident took place at Cape Fayolent, south of Crimea, and the British ship was repeatedly diverting from its course.
Russia annexed Crimea, which was part of Ukraine, in 2014. However, it has not received international recognition. The Foreign Ministry of Russia has summoned the UK Ambassador in this regard.
