Israel and Palestine are face to face. There are war-like situations between the two neighboring countries. Palestine’s Hamas (Israel considers it a terrorist organization) is constantly targeting Israel’s capital Tel Aviv, Ashkelon, and the city of Holon. Hamas has fired rockets at the cities of Israel from its occupied Gaza Strip. In response to the attack on Jerusalem, the Israeli Air Force attacked the Hamas-occupied Gaza Strip, targeting a 13-story building there. Israel says that this building housed the office of the political wing of Hamas. Many people have died in this struggle. An Indian nurse is also among those who died. There has been a long-standing conflict between Israel and Palestine. Since the independence of Israel in 1948, Arab countries and Israel have come face to face many times. The latest reason for the dispute is the eviction of Sheikh Jarrah by Israel. Sheikh Jarrah is the area of East Jerusalem, from which Israel is displacing Palestinian families and settling Jewish people. The Palestinian people are opposing it.
What is the Jerusalem dispute?
Jerusalem is the center of faith for people who believe in the three religions – Muslims, Christians, and Jews. There is al-Aqsa Mosque here. Muslims believe that Prophet Mohammad came here from Mecca. There is also the Dome of Rock near this mosque. According to Muslims, this is where Prophet Mohammed traveled to heaven. Muslims consider it the third holiest place after Mecca and Medina. There is also The Church of the Holy Sepalkar, the holy of Christians in Jerusalem. Christians all over the world believe that Jesus was crucified at this place and this is also the place where Jesus resurrected. There is a Western Wall in Jerusalem. The Jews say that they once had their holy temple here and this wall is the remaining sign of that. It is here that the holiest of the Jews is the Holy of Holies. The Jews believe that it was here that Ibrahim sacrificed his son Issac.
How old struggle
This struggle has been going on for at least 100 years. At the moment where Israel is, it was once ruled by Turkey, which was called the Ottoman Empire. The first world war began in 1914. Turkey supported the countries against the Allies in this world war. The Allies also included Britain. So Turkey and Britain came face to face. At that time the British Empire was at its peak, as a result of which Britain won the war and the Ottoman Empire came under the occupation of Britain. By this time, the spirit of Zionism was at its peak. It was a political ideology aimed at establishing a separate and independent Jewish state. Because of this, Jews from all over the world started coming to Palestine. In 1917, Britain’s Foreign Secretary James Belfor made an announcement stating that Britain was committed to making Palestine the homeland of the Jews.
How did the confrontation begin
On the last Friday of the month of Ramadan, a large number of Muslims gathered at the Masjid al-Aqsa in Jerusalem to offer prayers. After the namaz, these people started protesting against the eviction of Sheikh Jarrah. The protest turned violent and during this time there was a clash between the Israeli army and the Palestinians. The news of clashes between the Israeli police and the Palestinians started coming after the start of Ramadan. The number of Muslims coming to Masjid al-Aqsa in Ramadan is higher than on normal days.
Israeli police had blocked the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem city. Muslims said that this is an attempt to curb their religious freedom. In view of the increasing opposition, the police removed the blockers from there, but this was also a major reason for disturbing the atmosphere. Another reason for the dispute is also being told to Jerusalem-Day. In fact, Jerusalem Day is celebrated as a celebration of Israel’s victory in the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Israel won this war in six days and captured East Jerusalem. On May 10 this year, Jerusalem Day was celebrated. On this day the Israelis pray to the Western Wall in Jerusalem. The Western Wall is considered a sacred place for the Jews. Violent clashes also occurred during this visit.
What do Palestine and Israel want?
Palestine calls for Israel to return to international borders before 1967 and to establish an independent Palestine nation in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. At the same time Israel renounced its claim from East Jerusalem because Palestine wants to make it its capital after independence. On the other hand, Israel has always flatly rejected Palestine’s demands. Israel is not ready to give up its claim to Jerusalem. He says that Jerusalem is our capital and is an integral part of Israel.
Which areas in dispute
West Bank: The West Bank is between Israel and Jordan. Israel held it after the 1967 war. Both Israel and Palestine call this area their own.
Gaza Strip: The Gaza Strip is between Israel and Egypt. Hamas is currently under occupation here. It is an anti-Israel group. In September 2005, Israel withdrew its army from the Gaza Strip. In 2007, Israel imposed several restrictions on the area.
Golan Heights: Politically and strategically important, this area is a plateau in Syria. It has been under Israeli occupation since 1967. There have been several attempts for peace talks on the issue of occupation in this area, but there was no success.
